      Hi Matt,

Do you guys do architectural projects or are you in the animation business? Are you in US?

we got a _small_ farm ( wouldnt call it a farm...a herd perhaps )

        3 x workstations compaq w8000 dual xeon 2.4 1GB RDRAM ( what a mistake...very expensive to expand by now )
4 x HP proliant dl140 dual xeon 2.8 2GB DDR in a nice little 10 unit ibm rack with a KVM switch.

The proliant servers where cheap ( or so i think ) came in at just above 1000 euro each.

We are an architectural firm, we use Boxx for our workstations GREAT MACHINES but for our rendering farm we use the latest standard machine with extra memory that could be used by architects. Basically if we need to switch a machine in our office we take it from our rendering farm and order a new one to replace it. That way you always have the lastest processors in your farm, and the architects rarely need all that processing power and memory anyway. We have a 20 machine farm of which only about 15 ever work at any given time but that is because we have not purchased new machine in a long time due to economy (which is getting better for us.) We hope to have a new farm early next year. Plus we use the whole firm at nights which gives us access to about 100 machines total. Hope that helps, we have also looked into BOXX's render nodes for additonal power (they seem very cool).
