    What kind of lamps and shadows/settings works best with VRay if you need a whole lot of them¿

    I have a scene with 68 downlights and using VRaylights stress rendertimes to insane levels with the default settings. Add to irradiance map speed things up but kills the shadow detail

    Normally I use self-illuminated objects to fake GI and simulate lights, often with pretty good and fast results. Now I'm getting tired faking things and I actually want to use LAMPS for this interior.

    So.. when you need more then 2 lights for interior renderings with VRay. What lamps would you use?

    Ies files, with vray shadows, quite fast, good results, I have a project now with about 200 lights and it works without problems... For faster previews, I will drop the subd. of lights. and bring it back to default for the final image..

      I tried a scene using just 20 photometrics with IES files for some troffers and it took 5hr 37min for a 640x480. I used VRay shadows with Area shadows disabled. My final output will be 5250x3450. When I substituted planar VRay lights, the rendertime when down to 1hr 34min for 1024x768.

      Is there a trick to using photometrics and obtaining "quite fast" rendertimes?

        ARE YOU USING ERCO LIGHTS? MAKE SURE TO CONVERT ALL ERCO LIGHT MATERIAL TO VRAY MATERIALS. THAT HELPS.

          It has been said in this forum that some IES files are slower than others.
          If the difference be found it will be all the better.

          Some of you can get Lightscape out of the closet and calculate rediosity with it and finish the job in Vray.

            I do agree, but if the look wanted is the look of a point light (as Bratwurst said he wanted to use lamps for his interior), then I do think that web distribution works well. To speed things up, the only togle I can see is to drop down the subdivision to the lowest acceptable for your image.

            Actually, I never had a 5h37min , so can not be of any help there

            I'm never using Vray materials, does not works fine with our renderfarm here ... But a lot of people on this forum said that helps a lot. So I'm using vray in reflect/refract slot of standard mat. instead

                Hi Moose,

                I had already deleted all the linear lights. Usually I just turn them off, but I was so p-o'd at the situation that I took drastic measures.

                  I see there is no other way but using mapped objects with inverted outputs for lights. At least it works and it's damn FAST! I can easily have 500+ lamps of this type and render hi polygon scenes in 4096x in a few minutes with decent results. Replacing them with lamps, VRayLights or anything that's not indirect lightsources would stress rendertimes to insane levels, probably a few days for a tiny image.

                  However.. when using self-illuminated objects I have to render the irradiance map to file and then render the final image from file with all the self illumed objects hidden. Works well unless you have lots of glass in the scene because then you get a whole bunch of splotches and other strange errors. This because you can't move or remove objects after the GI have been calculated, even when "invisible to cam" is checked. Pretty much sucks and lamps simply wont fly. Anymore tips?

                    hey...

                    i think u people should try using the ies files of zumtobel staff lighting company. im pretty new to vray but works pretty fast with no problems as far as i can see. maybe it would help..thx

                      Just a little test, different parametrics can cause different render times, 17 sec. v/s 58 sec for a quick 40 lights preciew, bad quality preview.
                      My point is that different .ies files can provide different rendering times..

                      The slow one, from erco web site, the fast one, one I took on this forum someday..

                        Never mind, it was the model (again). Same problem I had before when importing AutoCAD drawings

                        I'm working on a new interior using 20+ Vraylights and without problems. I even managed to sneak in a few IES area lights. I'm using photons this time, 50 bounces and store to irradiance map on all lights. So far so good.
