  • vray light:dome -how does it work?

i found this new light type: dome in the vray light rollout.

this sounds interesting for animations with faked GI look but i cant get it to work.
it just lights the scene like a simple omni light.

    how does it work?
    Reflect, repent and reboot.
    Order shall return.

see it as an enviroment light (skylight) which works without using GI. Use similar multipliers (1-3) for this light as you would use for your GI environment light. Then it works and renders quite fast with a diffuse (skylightish) shadow

          how do you use it?
if i set the icon in the middle of my scene, like the center of a sphere,
it shines to the outside like a normal omni.
          the dimension settings dont work.

I believe you can just put it anywhere in the scene. I think the size does not influence the result. IIRC, it 'places'a dome of lights with optimized sampling around your scene.

Can you otherwise post a screenshot?

              Tammo,

put the multîplier to 1 instead of default 30.

it doesn't matter where you put it in the scene.

its just not working. it behaves like an omni light, but super-slow.
the light comes from the icon position.

i use max 7, maybe thats the reason?
all other features of the newest build work fine in max7.

another one without the two walls and ground:

Give it some dimensions .... and incase your scene with the whole Light !! its not like max's dome light !... .....so you engulf the whole scene with the light.

Are you sure it's the same without any walls? As it's a skylight, when you model a building, the light will come through the openings and give you shadows like you have in the image now.

above is the scene without walls.

i changed the uvw size, too (the light box icon is now larger than scene)

The dome light is always infinite, so it doesn't matter where you place it. The icon placement is just for viewport representation.

flipside, did you render that teapot with max 6?

on my last picture it looks like the tire is floating outside the dome.

                            Tammo,

I think that the solution is to render with
                            vray materials!

                              Max5

I just created that very simple scene, put in a dome light with multi=1 and hit render (default lights were turned of, don't know if that changed anything but I have it off by default)
