  • list of changes please?

It would be nice not to have to guess every change that has been made to the latest beta. Can we get some more information from Chaos?

I already noticed that Lightmap is a lot different, cleaner but slower when using the same subdivisions.

Vray lights also seem to behave differently, but I have not figured out yet the exact differences.

    QMC settings?
    Materials?
    ...?

Well Chris, this is not exactly what I mean. There seem to be many more differences than you can read there. Differences 'under the hood' so to say. How can we have a clue how to adjust our settings/materials to get similar results in a similar time?

I would not have posted this if the new build was twice as fast when opening a file. You can see from several people's tests already that you can't install and hit render and get similar results in similar render time.

I assume that Vlado/Peter have a good insight in these changes and that they can elaborate. I feel like thrown in the deep with this new build, just like when going from 1.09.03 to 1.45.70

I agree, for proper beta testing, the users need to know what technical changes have been made. This makes the people who are trying to help beta test it, narrow down problems.

I would also like to see a kind of list.

Seems strange to me that default settings change in a way that makes rendering slower. For example if glossies need lower subdivs for the same quality as before, why not make a shift in these values so that a converted file remains more or less the same? After all, everybody is used to some settings as being 'good quality' and now we need to test everything again to see with how many subdivs you can get away. First thing people do when getting a new version is rerender an old scene, which will not make you quite happy if you didn't read the forum first.

Not that I'm not happy with this new build
It's great but you need to know some tricks to get the max out of it.

          Regards,

            I second you points.....
I'd also like to know what needs to be tweaked from the last built to the new one to keeps a similar quality/speed ratio...especially since it seems as quite signinficat changes have taken place under the hood...

The major difference is the QMC sampler (and this is noted in the what's new section).

This would be best demonstrated if you have an example scene that you would like tweaked for the new build. If you have a particular scene that interests you, post it here and we'll discuss the settings. Otherwise, I'll try to come up with a simple example. In general, you can do with lower subdivs for light maps, GI etc, but it's difficult to give a general rule.

                Best regards,
                Vlado

the default setting for quasi-monte carlo GI is now 8 subdivisons, correct?

i found that in one of our old scenes this was set to 50.
