is it possible to shift all the processing work to the renderservers, so the clients only task is to assemble the buckets? It would be great if the processing tasks given to the client could be reduced, so you could do other things while an image is rendering...

Well, that's the way it used to work with the host computer only renderering if spawner was running on it too. But there was a lot of comments that it was to much work to start spawner localy so now this is the way it works. It would be nice to have the choice.

try the 'Low thread priority' checkbox in the settings rollout.. you'll be able to work locally a lot smoother, and it wont make a difference on the remote slaves..

If you have multiple CPU's in your workstation then you can also set the affinity for 3dsmax.exe in the task manager to use a less number of CPU's.
