  • Vray ambient occlusion script released

here is a little script i did today.
it renders an ambient occlusion pass from any scene. there is no need to setup anything or remove/prepare lights.
it also doesn't change anything in the scene, it's completely non-destructive.

    you can download it here:
    http://plugins.angstraum.at

IMPORTANT: this script only works with VRay 1.46 or higher.

i included some settings examples and links on the website...if anyone knows better links to general ambient occlusion info i'd appreciate it.

Re: Vray ambient occlusion script released

          It looks great, thank you.

Question for you: what is the main difference between an acclusion pass and a skylight shadow and no key lights?

          regards,

                glad you like it.

                egz, thanks for plugging

                Giovanni,
actually it's nothing more than a domelight without GI, or GI with environmental lighting without secondary bounces.
ambient occlusion is used in film for a quick way to simulate GI in post without the hassles of a real GI setup.
                for example:
                http://zj.deathfall.com/img/ambocc_dia.jpg
i think i read first about it some time ago in some article about weta and lord of the rings.

max7 comes with an ambient occlusion shader for mental ray. i played around with it and tried to recreate the effect with vray.
the cool thing is that vray is about 1/3 faster than mental ray with compareable quality.

i like the effect because it's very simple and strong. as opposed to standard GI skylight there is no need to tweak anything, you always get full contrast range from white to black. it's cool for quick visualisation, or as another pass to fix a washed-out GI scene with photoshop.

hey, it seems to be great, but i didnt understand where can we use the scene in black and white... it must be composite after at pos edition on PS? please, can you point me the right way?

                    hi silver,
                    look at this for example:
                    http://zj.deathfall.com/img/ambocc_dia.jpg

personally i always experiment with blending modes...there is no right or wrong way.

hi plastic, thank by your replay, sorry for this questions , but i still feel me in darkness... would you mind to explain better? because those images i've already seen, and i dont know what is it trying to say. what does PRMan and BMRT means? and when you talk about blending modes, where would i be suposed to use it? blend in players at PS or a blend material? sorry for so many question, but i feel that this thecnique really deserves to be learned

PRman Is the Renderer, Photo Real Renderman, BMRT is the GI method, Blue moon rendering tools (i think).

Anyway, what plastic is saying is render out the passes with vray, then in PS use the different layer blending methods to get the desired results.

So much faster than the MR ambient occlution.

                              Cheers!
