  • Prepass with render to fields?

    Hello,

We're rendering this animation for tv output, and we are using fields.

I dont know if this is normal to happen, as the GI prepasses happen for each field. Im using very high gi solution and 5 long prepasses for each field make my renders go over 1 hour a frame!!!

I know i could simply render without fields but double the frames, which would give the total render time more or less...

Wouldn't it be normal for gi to calculte only once for each frame, even with it being divide in fields?

    Its very strange to me

im not expirenced with animation for TV or animation period actually. But i have read somewhere else that doing fields in max is not necessary you can aswell do it from afterfx, combustion etc.
Also i dont think its plain neccesary to calc gi for each frame try every 2nd frame or less. There are plenty threads on that.

      Hey,
rendering the fields on AE...you do not get the same effects than rendering them on max...trust my experience
...otherwise show me the proof ...

Nope, it's definetly not the same! Fields need to be rendered in 3dsmax, or you can render at 50 fps and interpolate in After Effects, but that's a waste of time.
What i usually do is to render the GI solution and save it to file. When rendering the animation the GI is no longer processed. This will only work if you're doing camera animation, of course.

          Hi there,

Thanks for the replies. About rendering the GI solution to a file and loading it after its not a viable option mainly because we're calculating GI on a per-frame basis. We have lots of moving objects and characters and its not possible to save it first i think.

So it woul just be needed an option to calculate the GI per frame, not per-field. Is this anyway possible?

maybe a topic for wishlist no

This part below isnt in english i'm sorry.just a quick note for a friend.

Im not sure if it woud work, and I'm away from a computer to try it but if Max returns the same frame number for each field of a frame then my script might do it. http://www.chaoticdimension.com/foru...t=script+irmap

You'd have to run a irradiance map pass without fields and then use the load function for the fields.
