  • vray for truespace 7?

    http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=191690

If this is true, are we going to have truespace users asking questions in this forum?

You have a problem with that?

I wouldn't worry much about truespace users asking questions. If chaos keeps up the good work we'll have all kinds of users of a lot of apps asking questions in the next few years, which can only be a good thing.
I've never understood why chaos picked 3dsmax as the only host for vray to begin with... i can't think of a worst choice.

Well streetdog, I'd have to say that your not really a "power thinker" if you can't think of a worse choice

There are a lot of us Max users...

are you assuming that I do? because if I assume that you're assuming that I do then you would be wrong.

It was merely a question posed, nothing less, nothing more.

Well we know what assume makes out of you and me :P

Just seemed like that was where the question was headed, and the chances of you getting an official answer to that question are slim to none...

              LOL
No kidding!! I wonder why, since this is a v-ray forum and v-ray can only run in 3dsmax.

We should get more people and start a "power thinker" user group!

hehe, my point was that there are a lot of Max users in the world not just here on this forum. C'mon you have to admit that there are a lot of us, "by far the 3D industry's largest installed base of over 280,000 registered customers".

Yes, i completely agree. In fact i started using 3dsmax when it was still 3ds (v1!), about 12 or 13 years ago.
Since that time i've seen a lot of 3D programs come up and some other going down.
3dsmax somehow managed to be the standard, although there's a lot i can complain about it. Discreet has a lousy way of treating customers and the latest updates were a bit lame, to say the least. OpenGL support is still very poor, stability issues are still around and the workflow is far from perfect.
Now that i've got that off my chest i can tell you that v-ray alone is an excelent reason to pick 3dsmax! For me it is the only reason, although i must admit that 3dsmax has evolved a lot in the last few years and it's not a nightmare to work in it anymore.
Anyway, for the price you pay for it you have the right to ask for more. At least to ask for a decent revision of the code, from the core.

My point is (was): as soon as v-ray (or others than might achieve its levels in the future) reach other platforms (maya, xsi, cinema 4D, whatever) 3dsmax will have some trouble in keeping the 'king of the hill' title.

Don't get me wrong though, i'm not trying to trash 3dsmax. As far as i'm concerned it could be a lot better, but it gets the job done, money out of the clients and v-ray! What more can i ask?

i dont doubt that max benifits from "hording" all the good renderers. but there are a few reasons i think the alot of developers choose it as the launch platform.

back in the day, it was the cheapest package that was worth using. and it has evolved to desrve to be considered one of the best (no matter what quirks you gripe about). its also still competitively (though not aggressively) priced with a massive user base compared to some other softwares. this presents a major financial incentive to develop for max first. more money. maxers are used to buying extra bits anyway.

on the other side. max has had, and still does have and incredibly open architecture allowing for pretty easy integration of new concept software. i'm not a hardcore programmer, but from everyone i talk to, integrating into max is pretty simple.
also, alot of plugin developers(out of necesity) come from studio backgrounds with max. they know it inside out, and they start with what they know. its kinda like how some people just code for windows. they simply know how.

the only small unfortunate part of this is that some developers seem to get "stuck on max". forgetting the other packages and forcing people to switch to max even if they hate it. the common solution was once to use a standalone with an exporter, but we all know how much that sucks, but doing it right takes time, and cooperation. just think, "insert renderer here" still isnt perfect and all they have to contend with is little old max. eventually i think most of the developers would like to support all renderers... even truespace. just gonna take time, and the order it gets done might surprise you.

                    later

So there are three developments going on ??
The max version... the standalone version.. and now a Truespace
Version... hmm.. And 1.5 is not even released ? Hurra

CanĀ“t it be made compatible with povray script language too ?
                          Or a Terragen integration ? please !!

No seriously.. could please someone bring some light into this confusion ?

LOL, for all we know it is just a rumor, and there is not even mention of a release date..

A little early to turn this into a whining about 1.5 thread

Don't all those tears mess up you keyboards? :P
