How do you recreate this lighting effect?

Hi, Newbie here who's just got vray 1.45.7 version with Max 7. I want to create an interior scene with the sun shining in through the window creating a misty shaft of light coming through the window and hitting the floor. Problem is I do not know how to create this. To be honest I don't even know what the term is for this misty light effect.

Can anyone tell me how this is done and what the technical term is for this lighting effect?

Volumetrics or volumetric lighting. Check it out in your help files.

jujubee - Thanks for that. I can't find a volumetric option on the vray lights. Can this look be achieved using vray lights or do I have to use max lights?

you have to use a max light with a shadow map I believe.
