It should work good for grass in it's current build. You'll have to use the geometry hair plugin for it to interact with GI but this is also how you would do grass blades currently. I would almost recommend comping it in though cause there are some nice control with the OxMat and some features in the Volumetric and Effects settings but not sure exactly how these could apply to grass off the top of my head. Haven't had much luck with the dynamics so my animations consist of only simple rotations which work intermittently. I'm positive it will work extremely well with VRay in the future so you might want to play with it a little to get a feel for it. The next build is suppose to have many fixes and additional features. It's been a while since anything's been released but I think the more interest Marsel sees on the forum...
the best i knew was by the same people who did druid tree plugin. their grass plugin had a nice animation feature to it. dont think it was max for any version of max over 5 though
