  • Render machine

In your opinion what's the best best machine to render in Vray and eventually in MentalRay?
Is better a dual Xeon or a single Athlon 64?
Is Vray optimized for some kind of processor?

Is there a site with the comparison between this two systems?

    Thanks

    Dual is always better.

I was wondering if you go for a cheaper option, like pentium 4 processors, and by several renderers at lower spec, and deck them out with lots of ram, you will get more for your money.
I would like to see whether its worth having a few xeon renderers, or loads of cheaper machines. Using the less expensive machines, they would be easier to upgrade.
But I suppose at the end of the day if money is no option then a fleet of duals would be ideal.

I thought i read somewhere that vray was optimised for a pentium chip?

According to Vlado vray is not optimized for any processor or OS.

i didnt have good results with rendering animation on dual xeon, it was crashing randomly. I think this issue was discussed somewhere in this forum.
I dont think is cost effective for a little rendertime difference.

2 years ago my previous employer bought me Dual Xeon which was something like 4000$ - if you put 10 of these on the farm it comes to 40.000$

Dont forget the value depreciation every month...

With the same ammount you could buy an old stock of 2.8ghz pc's... it comes to about 74 old P4 2.8ghz boxes... jeezus.

The most reliable in my case are P4 with 1Mb L2 Cache, 1gig ram with Gigabit network. I never tried Athlon, Opterons, if someone had good experience building the farm with those, let us know.
