  • 1.46.10 DR Thread Priority

Hey all. We just upgraded to Max 6 and the latest V-Ray beta from 1.09, and I wanted to say that it's been a very smooth transition so far and the new version works fantastic. Getting much better lighting results with HDRI than I was before, and the new distributive rendering setup picks up the renders faster the way it's organized now.

Anyway, is there any way to set, either on the node machine or from the workstation I'm sending from, the thread priority for the render nodes? Is it still using Below Normal by default? One person in our office is complaining that she notices now her machine slow when we render to her machine, whereas before it never impacted the modeling work that she does.

    Thanks guys.

sorry dude but thats funny ... you render to some poor souls machines while they are trying to work on it .... Check out there cpu usage.. it will 100% . no wonder she is complaining.

You do what you gotta do when you're poor. One day we'll have a dedicated render farm. But we used to render to the nodes at below normal thread priority without any problem, so while it maxed out their cpu usage it still gave priority to all the user's processes.

Most of the time I just don't tell anyone I'm using their computer and they never complain.

Does that script work for the VRaySpawner? Looks like it's for backburner. How would I execute that on the nodes? Thanks!

I've been using that script for a while and love it
Just put it in the scripts\startup\ folder and it will set the priority whenever max is started in servermode. DR also uses that mode, and the script works fine.

                I do? Oh...ehehe...so I do

I've been out of town for a week and I can't remember the other 2 priority settings off the top of my head. As I recall, windows has 5 levels of thread priority, but maxscript can only set 3 of them. high, low, and normal I believe

well, there's realtime, high, above normal, normal, below normal, low (translated from my german winXp)
one should definetely avoid realtime - tends to block the whole machine

That's fine for me. Low's all I need. Had a hard time convincing the guys I work with that a low and high thread priority will go just as fast... just one will take an hour to open the task manager to check mem stats.

                    Thanks guys.
