  • Cartoon skin with SSS

Hi, whats the basic method of blending diffuse+lowerdermal map? I put diffuse in its own slot or in and the other map in scatter color?
Is Alshader better for this now that has 3 layers + 2 reflections? Also what about phase values for skin?
    Any tips appreciated
    thanks

You can try with translucency in a VRaymaterial too. https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...t=translucency

Alshader look better for realistic skin but it takes longer to render than translucency.

Look at some test renders I made:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AzgGqQ96uo
render time i got in these tests:
    Alsurface: 28m07s
    SSS2: 28m41s
    skinMtl: 7min6s
scatterVolume: 30m7s (but full of artifacts and probably more than an hour to get it clean so this one is just too slow)
    V-Ray translucency in standard V-RayMtl: 4m50s

Thanks, informative stuff there. Well i ended up using alshader with only 1 texture and seems to work good. Cant share nothing though for now, but i d like some tips for improving it. I agree with u in the video, i find it very hard to control vray SSS in general and same goes for transulcency.
To alshader thing: if i use only 1 texture for diffuse, and put sss mix to 1.0 im good? Thats basically my setup and seems to work ok. I added a vrayblend mtl with another alshader reddish color to control more the nose and ears. Would that be ur approach? thanks a lot

While this works, it will slow down your render. It would be more efficient to use just one material, but use different textures to control the scatter radii and/or colors.

Thanks for the tip Vlado. But how i boost the SSS amount if i wanna exaggerate it and double lets say the amount in the ears? Use a b/w map in sss mix so some parts dont have sss at all?

You would play with a map in the refraction and fog color along with the fog multiplier as well as the backside color map and the light multiplier under it.

By the way I am playing with this right now but I used a blend material with a mask and I pumped up the ligth multiplier and fog color to add more light in the sss. And I am getting red dots artifacts.(they are in the refraction pass) when using brute force + light cache. If I use brute force + brute force the dots disapear.

I will try to put my mask in the fog color instead of a the blend material blend amount.

So I put my mask in the refraction instead of the blend amount af a vrayBlendMaterial an dyes it renders a lot faster and I don't get those red dots anymore that way.

Can u share a scene with this setup? Just curious to see how this works.
                Thanks
