  • Question about Vray GPU Memory usage

I am currently in the process of buying a new computer for rendering. The question is wether I should spend the dollars on dual CPU`s, or go for multiple GPU`s instead.
The question is really if 11GB GPU memory is enough for my projects. I know newer versions of Vray GPU has features like mip mapping and intelligent memory management. But memories from the "speed cliff" from earlier days are still pretty strong :P. Anyway, are there any way to determine this? When does a scene become too heavy for the GPU and becomes substantially faster to run off a CPU instead?

Very hard to answer since those depend on project to project.
You might also consider the V-Ray GPU Hybrid rendering that is coming soon in 3.6 - https://labs.chaosgroup.com/index.ph...rid-rendering/.

I run 980 ti's with 6gb, since I try to use procedural, most of my scenes to date have only needed 1.5-2 GB of that memory while using hdr's for lighitng. Sometimes I'll run a texture or two to help with a surface, in which case I start to see the gpu memory go up to like 3.5, or 4gb...I just started playing with vraydisplacementmod, and saw the gpu memory go up to 4 gb. I think it depends on how you are building your scene. My scenes are not large landscape/archviz projects, but there is a good amount of detail for the products and engineering models.

I just built a monster workstation, incase you want to check out my thread just for reference...I'm super interested in checking out the hybrid rendering blago just mentioned...I really didn't invest in the cpu power in the workstation, but these old 2670's can keep up nicely with the 7x 980 ti's in ipr mode...not as fast though as running active shade with rt cuda...that is almost real-time. So far, the multi-gpu render wins out on my side.

Yeah, I understand its difficult to answer, especially with mip mapping and other techniques ... I am looking for some sort of guideline, not a definitive answer. But it might be futile ...

Welp, I overloaded my available power on my UPS to 104% using the added cpu hybrid...since it was brief, it didn't signal and let me continue Guess I need to add an additional psu and to redesign my power...circuit breaker were ok, but one ups reported pulling 10 amps.

Didn't mean to highjack your thread, but keep power in mind in whatever you build, especially a multigpu build.

Thanks, but no problem. I got stuff like that under control
