  • Vray RT tree leaves

So what is the best method for creating nice looking tree leaves with RT? The 2 sided material only works partially and the leaves look terrible when rendered in RT....especially in close-up.

See attached renders for quick example. Is there an alternative workflow for leaves that works with RT?

Would be best if the 2 sided material was fully supported by RT because every tree in our library and most commercially available libraries use 2 sided materials for the leaves.

This is really making us think twice about using RT at all.... as I would imagine most archviz studios would be too (or anyone that has trees in their scenes for that matter).

What are the settings of the V-Ray 2SidedMtl? At the moment as you mentioned not everything is supported so discrepancies between both engines are expected.
Did you try to tweak the shader a bit? From what I can see comparing the images assuming one is from RT and another from ADV engines the difference is mainly in the translucency, the RT leaves are more opaque than ADV ones. I think with a bit of a tweak it might be possible to get a similar looking material in RT engine as well.

Other options are to move to SSS material which has a better support for GPU rendering but that means you have to rebuild the shader from scratch.

Is there a chance to send me that scene to play with it?

Does RT support the translucency map in a 2 sided material?

Its a fairly typical 2 sided material for a leaf.... front and back materials (both have diffuse, opacity and reflection maps). And there is a map in the translucency slot (but I have tested without the map and all sorts of values for the amount of translucency and this doesn't help).

And can definitely send you the scene... let me know where to send to.

Ok So I have played around a bit. It seems RT does not support a translucency map (which sux.... please implement this!).

By removing the translucency map and increasing the value of the overall traslucency to 113 (mid grey) I have got a similar overall look but obviously without the translucency map the leave has an overall translucency where in the cpu version you can see the little veins down the middle (which looks much nicer).

The other weird thing is the rt version has these weird black triangles (circled in the image).... any ideas what is causing these?

Best to send scene to the support guys so we can investigate.
