Revit user's generally don't care to know about creating materials, they want an existing library. Plus, creating materials in Revit is an exercise in insanity. So the best way to get Revit people on board, is to give them libraries of materials.
My guess would be that this is the Vrmat library that has been mentioned a few times in the past, although I have yet to fully understand the strategy behind these materials. I think it would be fantastic with a standardized material definition between platforms, but if that is the intent then it has to be marketed as such.

Beyond a very few key materials in the scene, neither do I. Since a material is a material it is really stoneage that a 3D visualizer has to define these himself.
I know you mentioned the Rhino material presets but as you also mentioned that they are not adjustable, and there is not preview either.
They all have to be loaded seperatly.
So a present 500 material set would be great.

I own Hundreds of Materials and the Sigershop etc.....you pay for a lot of these, not Vray materials.de obviously.
I am at this game a long time, so I know how to make materials, its the new guy, a set of presets would help them.
I'm another user that would love a pre-made material library that could be used as a started point for other materials (editable). I can't even count the number of times I've needed to create a special material (something simple like a lamp shade, or realistic curtains, etc.), then searched the web for a quick tutorial to find the best settings, only to find the tutorial is hosted on a server in another country that is blocked by my I.T. department...
I use SigerShaders and I really like them. However, I have been creating my own lately. I start simple and I only crank up the complexity if I need it. You would be surprised how well a simple diffused works with a small bump.
What would be involved? Would every renderer have to develop new material editors or can existing ones be extended? Could a Vray material be adjusted to conform?
Are we a year out before anyone shows something you think?
It all depends on what are the plans of Autodesk and Foundry. If they are going to integrate Material X, I would prefer to leave the authoring tools to them and instead focus only on the rendering part.
