  • Autodesk's policies ... again....

    Hi,
I must say that I am really surprised that there is no more discussion about Autodesk's policies...
Have you seen the last one? http://cgpress.org/archives/autodesk...nce-plans.html
I discover each month a little more their will, and every month I am more and more very annoyed.

I will stop the costs as soon as my maintenance plan will expire to switch (I hope) to Blender (which I find impressive and far more powerful - did you see Eevee ?! - than the old 3ds max which is depleted). I am very closely developing the Vray4Blender because, not only but I think the future is moving towards that for me.
And you ? What do you think ? What are your plans for the future?
    (Sorry for my bad english)

We`d love to do the same, move to blender because it`s free. The issue has always been that we know the 3dsmax interface so well and it always seems capable of cranking through stuff very fast, there`s also always a few ways around a problem. While other software is sleeker and can have way better tools (see houdini etc), for general use 3dsmax just seems to have a quicker and more logical method to doing simple things at least maybe to the way i`ve become used to. i don`t know if it`s any different yet but i`m looking on youtube now and creating a spline and then extruding it in blender is a bit of a mission but in 3dsmax it`s very easy. Not sure what other software is like for basic functions like that. True that 3dsmax is a bit of a dinosaur though with a myraid old stuff just bought and bolted on, booleans anyone ? There`s also the downtime to learn entirely new software to be factored in. For now, better the devil you know.

I'm hoping Chaos Group is making good progress bringing interactive to Vray for Blender. I am looking at Eevee too, and would hope Vray has serious development in that direction. I <3 Vray, and want to see it succeed in the new fields that are expanding. The pipeline from Blender to VR seems to be getting pretty robust (Native support of Blend files in Unity for example), and I'd like for Vray to stay in the mix.

A couple of weeks ago I got a very good deal with my AD Dealer to upgrade my single 3ds Max perpetual licence - when they first put their quote under my nose it was too high - but they very quickly reduced it to an EXTREMELY good price that I simply couldn't refuse.

Autodesk's behaviour, and frankly, my recent experiences with a string of clients all telling me (in the space of a couple of weeks) that I'm too expensive (and that they could get their requirements done a *lot* cheaper) is really making me question that perhaps it's time to start looking to doing something else altogether. I love 3d but it seems (in my case) that thesedays there is too much going against me.....

Had I the energy and desire, and could see it is worth it, I would go the Blender route. Yes, C4D is great, but I think getting out of paying anything altogether and going for something which is free and opensource is a very good plan. They can certainly be trusted a whole lot more than AD and are making massive progress in big jumps.

Thanks a lot for your testimony !
It's really depend of your business, I mean, I'm free to stay or not with AD... You're sheep if you want to...
Anyway, when you talked about your "upgrade" for your single 3dsmax perpetual licence ?? what do you mean ?
          (Sorry for my bad english)

              Ok I understand !
BTW, the cost will increase every year so... if you can deal with that, it will be ok for you but I can't imagine to pay again and again for less and less stability, more bugs, less new features, less R&D... in one word, for a dead software like 3ds max
