  • Help Topic: Renderpasses

    Hi all
I have a question about VRay Render Passes.

    - What is the difference between Raw passes and non Raw ones? For example, why is there Raw reflection and reflection?

    - What is the difference between secular pass and reflection pass? (I thought a specular was a reflection)

    Thanks.

Raw passes are multiplied in compositing with diffuse filter to give u the non raw pass. In general raw passes is the information of the gi/light/refle/refra without color.
Specular is how highlight spreads its diffrent from reflection.

A basic compositing operation would be like Gi/Light/Refl/Refr/Spec/SSS/SelfIllum all in additive mode (ADD) at 16 or 32 bit.
A more advanced operation would be the same with the difference RAW GI * diffuse filter (multiply mode) = GI. Its just a deeper breakdown of the original image, which can help u sometimes if u are willing to make big changed in post.

Ur welcome, sorry if i explain this with so little detail hehe. Ye seems complicated if u r not familiar with comp, but its actually a pretty standard process among all render engines.

This might help u out clarify this a bit more. Even if u dont know Nuke, u ll understand the concept behind raw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOqdWK4r13E
