  • Question regarding Vray sun and HDRI with Vray dome - what multiplier for dome light?

    So say I'm using a script like find and bind http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/sc...ray-hdri-light

    I have a vray sun, and say I have my exposure set to 8 or whatever works with the sun - I bring in my hdri using the dome light.

    What exposure or multiplier should I use for the dome light?

    As it stands now I bring the HDRI as exposure 1.0, but then the dome light is too dark - what setting multiplier should I bring the dome light to - assuming the HDRI is a sunny daylight as well?

    Each one is different. Many of mine are a multiplier of 30.

      Have you tried to use VRayLightMeter to adjust the Dome Light intensity for you particular case?

        The dome lights intensity, should be kept at 1.0. You should adjust the exposure of the HDRI in the Material editor, by instancing the hdri map from the Dome Light to the mat editor, there you have proper control. The value you would use, depends on the HDRI (quality and level of exposure used to create it) and the scene..and of course the value used for the Vray Sunlight. I noticed you are using 8 for Vray Sun, that is WAY too high, in fact many places I have read that the default of 1.0 for VRay Sun intensity is to high, some say 0.2 if more accurate, some even go as low as 0.02.. The actual exposure of a scene, should really be controlled by the camera... I find when you have the HDRI map displayed in the Mat Editor, I set it's intensity values, so that it looks correct in the mat editor NOT in the viewport, then adjust the camera settings to get correct exposure in the render.

          I do the opposite. I set my HDRI so that my exposure makes sense. Several of my HDRI's have to be at a multiplier of 30 for my physical camera to work with real-world settings.
