What style are you going for? Looking at picture reference there are many ways: https://goo.gl/LkRHti
What are you aiming for?
Are you going for highres close up, or 'just' element in archviz?

i mean yeah, honestly, it needs to be a separate geometry that more or less "floats" atop the steps and is held down by the tie backs or rails or whatever style your going with.
I was trying to make a point that threads like this are worthless because they are 100% self serving and don't add anything to the archive the next time someone is struggling with the same thing and searches the forum just to find this dead end of a thread.
Well, actually, we ended up helping more than the OP, so not worthless anymore!

I don't know, carpet on steps is as descriptive as it gets. Not a carpet runner, or anything else obscure. Just carpet on stairs.

What about V-Ray Fur? Seems like you could fillet the step edges, then modify the Fur settings to look like carpet? Let us know what method you used.Work:

I ended up making sure all the vertexes were joined and a used a small 3D displacement. The problem I was having was the displacement was projecting out particular to the face; I guess along the normals. With a very small displacement, it worked, but probably just as good as a bump map did. I didn't try fur, but I'll play with it.
