  • Area Light Mapping Issue

Hi guys, I have an issue with V-Ray for 3ds Max - 3.60.03

When I map a HDR file to an area light (using a VrayHDRI texture, some of the top of the image is being shown on the bottom of the area light. See this example, where on the image being mapped, the red is only at the top of the source exr. But when mapped to the area light, you can see a thin red line at the bottom too. Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance for your help.

Try setting tiling to something like 0.99 or turn it off.
Alternatively create a composite map, plug a black VRayColor as base, then add your HDRI on top of it.
    Software:
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
    3ds Max 2016 SP4
    V-Ray Adv 3.60.04

    Hardware:
    Intel Core i7-4930K @ 3.40 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 (4096MB RAM)
    64GB RAM

Thanks for the ideas/advice Art48, but surely there should be no need for those hacks. Mapping an image to the area light should just work as expected. Hopefully someone from Chaos can help with this.

It's a max thing. Maybe it has something to do with image filtering. Try turning down blur or turning off filtering of the image. Maybe. I know that this is actually an issue and if you know a way to get rid of this without using hacks i'd like to know it, too .

As Art48 said - it looks like a Max issue. The same happens in Scanline with the texture applied to a plane. Luckily, the workarounds he proposed work great

Doesn't it go away if you turn off U/V tiling for the map?

            Best regards,

AFAIK max treats the "base color" when turning off tiling as white. Hence the approach with the composite map. It's really weird. Maybe they fixed it in future max versions. I mean why the hell yould you treat "nothing" as 1.0? Autodesk.

Hi Vlado, I tried your suggestion and the red line at the bottom does not go. I am using a VRayHDRI and turned off Tile on U and V, it stays the same. I tried to reduce the blur to zero.... it went to 0.01, and still looks the same.

So this is a bug in VRayHDRI - if both tiling options are OFF, this should not happen. Will fix it.

                      Best regards,

Omg I've had this issue where I tried to use a vrayhdri map as the mask for a logo being projected on a box with tiling off in a vrayblend map. I set the coat blend color to black but outside the uvwmap it would still show the coatmap. I ended up cutting the geometry. Would this be the same issue? I don't recall having this issue in previous versions though.

The issue that I'm talking about has always been there.

                          Best regards,
