  • Objects turn black until touched

this might not be a vray specific issue but i only notice it when using vray, some objects show the correct assigned maps in some scenes only when touched, i noticed it long before with previous versions but only now it thought to ask just incase there is something i have been missing

I get this problem when taking a screenshot of the viewport internal. Sometimes I even have to unshow the textures and make them visible again material editor so the objects are not black again. Strange behavior...

I have the same experience. Assumed it was a video card/ driver / voodoo type issue.

I usually open the viewport display settings menu and choose show realistic materials with maps. (Why there is no check mark or indicator of which one of the setting choices is currently selected has always perplexed me. I tried asking about that on the adesk Max forum. Complete waste of time and frustrating as usual.)

Also sometimes revert back to use default lighting and no shadows. disable/ re enable these settings seem to get things to display without going black, but it?s random in my experience. Hope this may be of some limited help.

This is a well known bug, caused by mirrored instances. Technically, in 3ds Max, mirror is just a negative scale of the object on one axis, and if you negative scale the object, you basically turn it inside out, so technically, it has inverted normals, but 3ds Max assumes it does not, and gets confused.

my experiences do not involve mirrored instances.

but, on a side note, what you point out is good to know and may have something to do with why the glass in imported Revit models is usually so whacked ( I recently worked with Revit model from architect and had to replace most of the glass. the rest of the model was pretty good to work with)
