  • 1.46.12 memory error in high res rendering (max7)

i am getting a memory allocation error with a 2 k rendering (vray1.46.12 max 7,win xp,dual xeon 3.06 2gb ram) 'low' gi preset and no quasi montecarlo settings above 6/3-4 samples. i am using speedtree and displacement mapping. (no changes in bsp system- and memory settings)
it renders fast and well in 800/500 pix... does anyone know where the problem could be?

    Hi Odina !
How many or complex trees do you have ?
How many displaced objects do you have too ?

I had the same problem of crash, the solution was to avoid displacement
in areas far away from the camera, and my trees were transformed in
proxies objects (in this case no modification on the trees,no animation).

    Bye !

      hi gael,

      thx for your hints
did you use speedtrees to convert to vray proxies and how did you do that
i get no geometrie exported just an empty 1kb file ...?
would be great to get an idea, how to export these trees as proxies...
      ...

Hi Odina, can't you transform your trees in simple meshes, then you will be able to turn them into proxies.

unfortunately speedtree doesnt allow you to convert to meshes (well laast time i checked anyway) so making them into proxies could be impossible.

are you using instanced trees or copies? if you are using instances, turn the geometry switch in system settings to "dynamic" and you should use less ram (rendertimes have a habit of shooting up, but it should at least render)

(on a side note, im sure in 1.09 switching to dynamic (instanciate) never used to kill the rendertimes so much...or is it my imagination? i always used to use it, but now i rarely do coz it takes 10 times longer to render)

if you are using copied trees, i suggest you use "object replacer" script to replace them with instances. (can be found at scriptspot.com)

as the lasst post said, how many trees are you trying to render? and how much displacement? those two, trees and displacement, are about the most memory hungry things you can render, so you may have to render a few seperate bits and comp them together if you cant optimise the scene enough.

u can also try turning the "max tree depth" from default of 60 down to say 40, and the "face/level coef." up to 10 or 12. this reduces ram usage at the expense of rendertime. turning either of these settings too far will cause problems of their own tho.

          hope this helps

odina, first of all you should download the latest build on our site; second, you can try to look at this page for information on how to reduce memory usage:
