  • Wierd light reflections/refractions

In the animation pictured below I'm having problems with this light representing the laser. The light is a small v-ray light attacted to the end of the handpiece. As the handpiece moves toward the tooth at random frames a spot of light will appear, and then dissapear in the next frame. I'm not sure if this is caused from the reflection or refraction of the tooth material, since it does have both. Anyone have any ideas.

Maybe the light is being affected by the geometry of the device.

I don't think so, i have the light placed right in front of the tip, so it's not actually shooting through the glass. The refraction on the glass tip is comming from a small self-illuminated sphere. But maybe it is that sphere?

Are you using interpolated glossy reflections? If you are, I'd say thats the problem.

Nope, not using any interpolation. Also removed the glowing sphere that was stuck in the glass and rerendered, same problem. In fact I'm thinking it has something to do with the refraction of light on the tooth. I also had another problem appear. It seems on one of the rendered frames half of the tooth decided to disappear. It actually only one one of the fields of that frame, but still very strange. Any ideas? Here's what it looks like:

If you have any refraction in there, it might be a good idea to upgrade to 1.46.13 and see if you still get the problem.

            Best regards,
            Vlado

Ouch that last image brings back bad memories.

Trap - most of the animation I do are for dental procedures, trust me it gets worse

Vlado - I rerendered with .13 and while the dissapearing geometry was resolved, i still have the random lights apearing all in the tooth. My guess is that it definately is the refraction, going to run a test tonight with no refraction to see if it goes away. I posted my material setting below to see if that would help. Also not show is that it is a multi-sub object material.

I also wanted to add a big thanks to everyone for the helping me.

I rendered without refraction on the tooth and no more flashing lights. Anyone have any idea how to keep refraction on but lose the random lighting anomolies?

You could try lowering the max depth of your refraction, less chance of the light bouncing back out. Also, the higher the IOR, the more the rays of light get bent when they enter the tooth, a lower IOR than 2.5 might allow the light to pass through.

Thanks Daniel, I will try both of those and see what happens.

I lowered the IOR to 1.5 and the max depth to 2. Results: the flashing was more prominent and frequent. Unless anyone else has any ideas I'm thinking that I just can't use refraction for this object if i'm animating the light.
