I know why, but will it ever get better? I mean, if I hit the progressive button by accident when I really want to do a final bucket render, I have to wait 10 minutes before I can cancel. It's a pain anyway when I am using progressive, but it's worse knowing I am going to cancel anyway. I have tried a few other renderers, but the whole instancing thing doesn't happen. I just assume that time is upfront time, which will speed up the render overall, but that is just an assumption. Is there anything I can do while building my scene to speed it up? I know, stay away from displacement, but anything else?

What are you using for your instances? Forest Pack, the VRayInstancer, Frost or something else?

Forest Pack Pro and instancing V-Ray Proxies by hand. It would be nice to be able to cancel that process, but now it's grayed out until the render starts.

Then this would be a request for Itoo. V-Ray does provide access to the progress window and the Cancel button, but the code in Forest Pack needs to make use of it.

I find it is usually because of displacement or meshsmooth modifiers which have a higher render subdivisions than their display subs.
see if your scene has any of those, delete & test.

Yes, I have displacement, which I listed in my original post. I'll see what happens when I turn it off globally.
