  • VRayScans as a Source of Learning: Break down scans into maps

    Hi Guys

I would like to ask if Chaos Group would ever release a few scanned shaders (maybe 1 shader per catagory) for free educational use?

I would like to see a data set from the scanned materials that includes bitmaps that drive the shader.

For example, a metal shader data set would have Diffuse, Specular, IOR maps that would be really useful to study.

From those more broken down data-sets we as CGI artists can re-create our own maps to mimic the data.

    Thanks

    Hi Steve,
if the customers demand it, we decompose the materials into maps, but this is just for their side use (for example in some GPU engines). The way how VRscans work is NOT based on map decomposition at all, there are no specular, diffuse, glossy, and other maps inside the vrscan file.
There are many samples that rendered by VRayMtl+ these decomposed maps look almost the same as the VRscans, but in almost all the cases you can see the difference and the map based are more artificial. And this is the good case, in the worse case the map based material just does not work or is significantly worse, for example sparkly materials, holograms, volumetric translucent materials...

      Hi Steve,
Even now, you can grab a 90-day evaluation license that has full access to the library and use it with no restrictions.
We know from feedback from other users, though, that the Vrscans can be very useful as a reference for re-creating materials.
Please don't hesitate to message us at vrscans(at)chaosgroup.com and we'd be happy to help with whatever we can.

      Thanks!
