  • Volume grid contents disappear when camera gets too close?

Does anyone else experience this? If i move the camera or perspective view inside or too close to/into the Volume grid, the contents of the grid, in my case smoke, disappears. Same thing with phoenix fd simulations. I can't seem to render from inside the smoke.
I'm using 3ds max, vray next gpu.

Interesting that it seems that it kinda also depends on the camera's FOV, some of my cameras can get closer, and with others the smoke disappears from alot further away.
Another thing i noticed is vray next gpu is really struggling to render fine/thin layers of smoke/dust (generated with phoenix fd and with custom opacity graph). Rendering on the cpu seems to clean up better. The attached image is a small patch is about 200x200 pixels, i rendered for 20 minutes on 2x gtx1080. I notice these rectangular patches/error quite frequently when working on very subtle detail. Rendered with 10k sample limit with 0.007 noise limit. This is part of an interior scene, the sunlight hits that thin smoke, also some other vray lights to a small degree. If i isolate out the dust alone, it renders very fast. If i put an object in the middle of it (still isolated), then it starts to struggle, slow down dramatically and looks like it doesnt know what and how to AA, leaving those rectangular patches.

If anyone knows a good and fast rendering (on gpu preferably) way to add fine floating sand/dust like shapes, any suggestions are welcome. Thank you

Years later, but I'm also having this issue - mine isn't caused by the camera, but by intersecting Volume Grids. Works fine on Vray CPU, but need the speed of GPU renderer. Coming up against limitations of Vray CUDA / GPU so often that it's really making it impossible for me to use it in production
