  • URGENT: VRAY NEXT - DR problem - random nodes dropping textures

    Hello,

ever since the NEXT came out we had nothing but troubles with the DR (no problems with 3.6). 1st it was the DR bug where the rendering crashed, then the one where the buckets were missing textures but this time its completely beyond my understanding.

Here i will describe whats happening:

    1. Random scene sent to BB with DR on or rendered with DR on a local machine (happens in both cases)
    2. All the nodes load up textures and start rendering
    3. Either at the beginning or during the render one of the nodes looses textures and renders only with grey material and lighting
    4. Either this stays till the end of the render or the node starts rendering with textures again
    5. 3 cameras in the same scene, 2 render fine, one renders like this - this is random, it can be a different camera next time
    6. The scene can render like this, i stop the job, restart it and its either there again or it renders fine
    7. If the scene renders locally without DR on, it always renders fine on every node

Here is what we have done already to troubleshoot:

    1. Our IT specialist checked all the network setups
    2. The HW has been checked up as well
    3. There is nothing there in our network that would prevent a node either NOT TO LOAD or to LOOSE textures
    4. moreover we always have "transfer missing assets" checked when doing DR

Unsure what this is but trust me, for us, this is a complete show stopper when it comes to production. Until NEXT we never had problems like this before.
We have already invested countless hours into bug hunting, troubleshooting and tracking this thing down, we even bought some new HW to check if this is not a HW thing.

This must be another VRAY NEXT bug and hopefully it gets fixed soon otherwise we face some real problems with out clients.

    Please help
    Thank you!

    Hello,

Sorry for the delayed reply and for the troubles you are having. So far we haven't seen this issue.
Could you send the problem scene to our support - we'll try to reproduce it here and debug.

    Best regards,

are you running linux for your main server where textures are getting access from? or what OS is it running?

i am already in touch with the support guys thank you.
It seems that Vray objects like VrayIES and VrayFur etc are not being relinked at all and this has to be done manualy.
I remeber this used to be happening with IES lights when the paths were nt UNC but this time everythign we have is UNC and when we for some reason have to relink the scene, the Vray objects do not show up with missing texture properties and thus remain unlinked.

So far i ve tracked it down to:
        VrayIES
        VrayFUR
        VrayLight DOME

Weirdest thing is that some nodes see these linked and some dont ...i dont get it
When i render carpet with fur, some buckets render without and some with etc...

Also i found out that some computers when i run SPAWNER show some errors with max script with various vray objects such as vrayIES etc...i was advised to delete ENU folder on those comps and see if it makes a difference.

i will keep you updated how this goes!
        Cheers
        M

is the main server they are reading textures and assets from a windows machine? if yes, then they may be encountering a 10 machine connection limit (common in windows). That would explain the random droping.

              aha that....hmm
well we have all the textures on the Synology NAS drive which runs on Linux. I will have to talk to our IT guy and check that.
              Thanks for the pointer!

Right, its what I was asking. In theory if a render machine can see the texture on a single job, it should be able to see that texture during dr.
With that said, there can be a few unpredictable issues, some I've experienced my self. For example, I deploy vray and other installs using deadline, so in theory every machine which gets the install has the exact same install and version of vray. But, even by doing so, I had few machines which failed to properly install vray for max. I spent million hours trying to figure out the issue. Works on small scene, breaks on large scene etc etc. So, doing a full manual reinstall of vray solved that DR issue, this was a while back.
So its safe to try and reinstall vray on all machines.
Next I would suggest doing DR with one machine. Even not using main workstation, just one machine with dr and see what happens. If that machine renders fine, add one more, repeat that process until it breaks. Once you can narrow down and isolate the issue it can be easier to track what happened.
                Just some thoughts for you...
