How do I use (or color map in PS) a displacement map that has 50% gray as base?
I'm not sure if I understand your inquiry correctly. If you mean what parameters you need to set to the displacement modifier in order to keep the gray area undisplaced, just split amount value by 2 and place that value into the shift parameter with negative sign.
Is it really like this? I tried that but for some reason it looks wrong. Maybe because the gamma setting of the VRayHDRI now that I think of it.
Edit: Nevermind, it worked - seemed to have something to do with the gamma setting in VRayHDRI not being correctly set (user error). But furthermore I sitll have massive issues using VRayHDRI as default bitmap loader due to uncontrollable caching and sometimes not updating the mat editor preview correctly despite reloading and sucht. Not fun to use :-/
I did mention it, not sure if in a thread of a support ticket though - sorry, don't have time right now to look for it. It's been a while though, several months.
