  • Using the dome light in V-Ray Next

Hi, I am trying to light a scene in 3ds Max using V-Ray Next and the dome light. After seeing the new features I wanted to try and achieve a similar outcome; however I am finding it difficult to get the desired effect.

I've looked through the documentation and attempted to follow each step and tweak settings suggested
    on this link: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/VRAY4MAX/Dome+Light
    and this link: https://www.creativebloq.com/how-to/...etter-lighting

I have added the example from V-Ray which is what I am hoping to achieve, along with my scene and settings.. am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Your HDRI might be very dark. Also, make sure to enable the adaptive domelight feature in the domelight. Light distribution will be much better, without the use of light portals.

The tutorial from the link says that you should use the Adaptive dome light instead of Light portals. With the new Adaptive dome light V-Ray will "know" where the light is coming from so there will be no need for the portals to help the sampling.

If I understand you correctly, you want to achieve the volumetric effect from the windows in the example image. You must add VRayEnvironmentFog and tweak its settings a bit to achieve this in your scene.

p.s. It's a good idea to update your V-Ray version (as I see you are not using the latest one)
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

Thank you kosso_olli and matanov for your replies I really appreciate it. I have now enabled the adaptive dome light and changed my HDRI along with removing the light portal.
Will also add in the VRayEnvironmentFog and will have to double check I am using the latest version too. Thank you again!

Clearly the HDRI youre hooking is is either too dark, or your multiplier settgins in the vray dome light are too weak OR your camera exposure is too low.

What Martin wrote; the image is too dark and the HDR seems to lack a clearly expressed direction of lighting.

              Best regards,
              Vlado

Thank you PIXELBOX_SRO and vlado for your responses! Really appreciate it, will look in to the multiplier settings and camera exposure, I have a few different HDRI but each I try seem to have the same effect; any suggestions of were I can find the best ones for what I am trying to achieve? Thank!

These are free and have a great exposure range: https://hdrihaven.com/hdris/

Yours look like there is no exposure range at all.

Multiplier in Dome light with hdri should be set to 1. Copy your hdri as an instance into the mat editor and control intensity by using the multiplier there. Check Adaptive on dome and don't use sky portals. Make sure that your camera exposure is set to appropriate exposure for an interior shot. I typically set it at iso 200, 5.6, 200. Then set camera to auto exposure, and white balance.

Let me know if it works...Some hdris have a mulitplier indicator in their file name. For example 3d collective hdris will have a +32. This means the multiplier in the vrayhdri material should be changes to 32 instead of 1. Remeber to only increase intensity in the map not the light. Other HDRIs you have to play around to get the right multiplier.

That's great thank you so much! Yeah increasing the settings in the map is working great now and getting much better results!
