  • High resolution render crash a the end, only on some older render nodes.

    Hello all,

I have a problem when rendering high resolution render, usually more than 5k, some of my render nodes crash when the render is finished.
i get this error in deadline : Error: RenderTask: Unexpected exception (Trapped SEH Exception in CurRendererRenderFrame(): Access Violation

This wasn't happening with vray 3.6.

2 of my workstation render the job fine ( i7 4790 and I7 7820X - 32 Gb ram ) but my 4 other nodes (older) (dual xeon e5-2870 - 64gb ram) can't finish the frame, it crash at the end...
I don't know what going on here it was working ok in 3.6, ( i open multiples scenes that was working ok before) but if i render the frame at a smaller resolution, it works .... on all nodes.
what i don't understand is that my old nodes are still way faster and have a lot more ram than my current i7 workstations.

i tried to change the Dyn mem limit to 0 to 30000, 50000, nothing work, use embree or not don't change anything.
I'm in the middle of a tight deadline and i really need help guys

What i'm doing right now is rendering my animation on my i7 workstation with distributed rendering but it's really not ideal.
    Thanks a lot

    cedric

Ok, so i figure out that the problem come at the very end of the render ...AND if i remove the pass the frame is saved. even at really high resolution
My render nodes do not have GPU, the denoiser render element seem to be the problem, maybe now by defaut in NEXT it use GPU and do not switch to cpu ?
In fact there is a GPU, a crappy GT710 just to have display ...

i should buy some cheap GPU, what the minimum graphic card to get denoising at high resolution without braking the bank ? thanks !

You shouldn't need a GPU, the CPU will take over if one is not found - think render farms. The results should be the same!

Yes, if i uncheck Hardware acceleration it works ! OK then, Maybe by defaut it's ON in vray next and was off in 3.6 ! Cool !
I think Vraynext detect my gt710 and try to denoise with it ! but it don't works on high resolution.

Nice. I understand that if you leave it on by default, and the GFX card is not suitable, then it will swap to CPU anyway, so it should be ok to leave as is. But if its fixed your issue then leave it off, and just know that the CPU, I would guess, is slower, and if you submit a network render, machines with a good GFX card will still use CPU.

That was crashing in deadline when i submitted to network rendering here, so i think it try to denoise with the crappy GPU and not with CPU.. , that is why i had the error and the frame was not saved at the end.
Thanks for the help m_hinks !

I would then say it would look like a bug, if the GPU cant do it, it should use the CPU instead, not crash.
vlado might be able to help here.

                  Hello, Cedric!

Thank you for the details you've shared so far.
I'm trying to reprodce the issue but I'll need more specific information.

What are your exact VRayDenoiser settings in the scene? (denoising engine, strength, radius)
What other render elements do you have?
What GPU driver version do you use on the failing machine (the one with GT 710) and does the problem persist after an update?
Is this reproducible with the same settings (5k resolution, hardware acceleration, etc) with DR using the failing machine for server, or is it just happening with Deadline?
And finally, it will be best to send a simplified scene which demonstrates the issue to support@chaosgroup.com

                  Thank you for your help!

                  Best regards,
                  Margarita
