Transforming Vertices takes 5 minutes

I am trying to render a library scene using vray proxies for 77 groups of books. There is over 12,000 vray proxies in the scene, equalling 340 million polys.
When trying to render, the "transforming vertices" part takes almost exactly 5 minutes to complete before rendering begins.

Is this normal??

So i've just reduced the poly count to 99 million and this time it took longer.... 5:45 sec to get past the "transforming vertices".
