  • VRayMtlWrapper Matte Mat. doesn't work with Vray Dome light

I'm trying to have a Matte Material (using VrayMtlWrapper) with a dome light as the HDRI emitter and background (HDRI visible) but the Matte object becomes solid. The only way to make this work is to use the HDRI as a Environment Background and turn ON the Invisible option on the Dome Light which is waay more clicks and setup.

Any way that this could work without the alternate setup?

    Thanks,

    -Fausto.

Also, when I use the setup (HDRI instanced on Env.Background slot and turn on Invisible on the Dome Light), I get the attached result on my IPR render

Anyone seeing this issue? It's very easy to reproduce

        Hello,

Matte objects return the texture loaded as a background and it's the expected behavior (if there's no texture loaded, matte objects will take the color of the environment). When it comes to the attached IPR result, I didn't manage to reproduce it in a simple scene, so it might be something specific that is causing those artifacts. Could you send me the scene for investigation?

Sorry Philip, just saw your post.

So, if I have a Dome Light which has the HDRI visible, the Matte object should show as a solid grey? That does not sound like the expected behavior since having the visible HDRI image on a dome light it's much easier and convenient that having to plug the image into the Environment>Background.

Is this a 3DSMax limitation or is done by design by Vray?

Please see a simple scene that reproduces the IPR (CPU not GPU) error

            Hi,

The dome light may be left as either visible or not and the result will be the same in that case. The matte object, however, will consider only the environment map / color, which is made like that by design. F.e if you have a visible dome light with loaded HDRI texture and red color set as an environment, then the matte object will be rendered in red, regardless of the dome light state (visible or not). As for IPR - it uses lower min shading rate value when compared to production rendering in order to make it more interactive. Indeed in that case the IPR result shows some artifacts and I'll make a note about it. Thank you for your feedback.

            Best,
            Philip

Gotcha, makes sense, thanks for the explanation! Also thanks for checking the IPR issue, I hope there is a way to get it fixed

              Best,
