  • Saving JPEG from the VFB results in wrong gamma/contrast levels (with save tonemapping checked)

    Hello guys,
only yesterdays we started having a very strange issue when saving a render from VFB as JPEG.
We always make sure that when we save, we have the SAVE IN IMAGE checked and when we save we make sure we save JPEG with gamma 2.2
    Saving to VRIMG is fine.

This just started happening yesterday so i am really unsure what the hell is going on.

here is an example - right is VFB, left is saved JPEG

    Any help really appreciated
    Thanks!!

It seems to me that the lack of contrast is due to the file compressing and color clamping when saving to .jpeg. By default, the VFB color corrections are baked in the image when the output is set to .jpeg (the 'save VFB color corrections' checkbox refers to the multi-channel image formats), so that doesn't seem as the likely reason, nor does it look like a gamma difference. However, if you still have concerns about the issue, it may be best to send the scene to support@chaosgroup.com for investigation. Mention this thread as well.

Does this look the same in photoshop? I never use the windows image viewer to view images. Either Irfan or photoshop. I've had some weird colors and contrasts in default image viewer due to some bad colorspace settings in windows in the past.

What Ashley said: use a properly color managed viewer (or the VFB itself!), and see if it still gives you the same results.
The attached images may show you which one is (but take it with a pinch of salt! They come from ICC to test web browsers.).

I think this difference is a bit too strong for it but do remember about sRGB and 2.2 not being the same in blacks. and your render is quite dark.

I had renders looking completely different, this is actually not that noticeable comparing to what I came across when using wrong color profiles.

are you using any screen calibrating software?
