  • very slow vdb rendering - how to speed it up?

I'm on the current Vray NEXT CPU rendering with a 32 core threadripper and am getting insanely slow render times with VDB volumes

Any tips here to get decent speed and quality ?

I have never really got acceptable render times with VDB clouds in vray and last time I tried I had to move to redshift which is not a possibility this time....
thread here showing the bugs from last time
    https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...sparency-issue

the attached render took 4 mins at 1280x720 with LC at 200 and AA at 0.1.....and thats with LC on in volume rendering. turn that off and it grinds to a halt.
the vdb volume is only 20mb and is much much much less detailed than the previous thread.

I'm sorry as I don't have a solution for your issue, but I've downloaded the files and notices that your files are infected by the Maxscript virus, so be careful ..read more about it here

also the second link isn't for vdb I think you will need to update it .

      Hey,

The issues from the first thread you mentioned should be resolved with the new V-Ray and Phoenix versions. If you still have some issues, please let us know.

We have prepared a really handy guide for optimizing Volumetric renders. You can take a look here - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...ering+In-Depth

If the suggestions there don't help - can you link to the vdb files as you have linked to the scene two times and we'll investigate what is going on.

      Thanks!

The "virus" is in fact the remnants of an aggressive licensing check, and will sit on controllers and such odd places (if in plain sight, if one knows where to look.).
Try and not merge or xRef old/suspicious stuff in new scenes, and maybe have max 2020 (get a demo version in case) to clean your old assets up, to then re-save them in a previous max version.
The AD-written cleaner in max 2020 is very thoroughly built.
