  • Vray sun issue

    Hey guys,

Getting this weird issue with objects that are being hit directly by Vray sun. I've tried adjusting intensity of the sun, the aperture of the camera and all of the exposure settings. No matter how dark I make the scene, all of the objects hit by where the light enters the room ends up with these weird colours.

Hoping somebody is going to tell me I've been an idiot and it's a quick fix!

    Cheers,

Check if you have the 'Force color clamping' in the VFB disabled (second icon on the bottom toolbar) - if yes, enable it.

Better send the scene to support@chaosgroup.com so we can take a look. Mention this thread in the e-mail as well.

It looks like you are using a sharpening AA filter.
Does this happen when rendering with the default one too (Lanczos)?

                Hey Lele,
Apologies for the late reply on this, work projects got in the way of this personal project and I completely forgot about this post on the forum!

You are correct though, it was the Mitchell-Netravali filter that was causing this.

                Cheers

Is there a way to hide these artifact-causing filters from the UI?

A question to ask the devs, although i tend to agree with you.

They are there for the sake of (old) compatibility (Max's Scanline, and other renderers have them too.) and AA matching.
I have not used any other filter, however, since the V-Ray version of Lanczos (without the negative part) was introduced, and set as the default one.

Sharpening filters are heritage of a *long* time ago, and other algorithms (Scanline, REYES), where sharpening was used as the shading samples were generally too few, resulting in blurry renders.
They are very very slow, need a big filter size (like 4 pixels or more.), they're prone to "ringing" with overbrights, and as such they really shouldn't be used with path tracers.

There could be other reasons for their persistence, however, which i am not aware of.
If there are none, You do have my vote for removing the problematic ones, at least from the UI, or to move filtering to an advanced/expert UI mode, so it's not assumed that it should be changed.
The latter would require some UI rearrangement, though.
