I have never been able to successfully place a nice sky behind my scenes in post-production because of awful haloing. I render on a black background, I have tried a background element and everything else under the moon, but nothing has ever worked. There has to be something that I am missing. I have tried the defringing in Photoshop, but that doesn't help.

If it's on a black background you can try Layer>matting>remove black matte instead of definge

Yes, I tried that. It is the trees that cause this issue and that is 95% of my images.

black background > saved as EXR > open in photoshop as Transparency. That allways works for me.
