  • Back to Beauty Bugs

    I think I've found 2 bugs

The first one is that the VrayRawTotalLighting render element's behavior is wrong if you don't also have the VrayTotalLighting render element added as well.

    And

It appears that the VrayToonMaterial doesn't composite its reflections and specularity back to beauty properly. I'll try and whip up an example but I've been swamped at work and NDA's prohibit me showing what is in front of me.

To render a correct raw render pass it is necessary to render its corresponding main element and filter, in the case of VRayRawTotalLighting, this means to render a VRayTotalLighting and a VRayDiffuseFilter RE.

Regarding the VRayToonMtl, we are aware of the issue and our developers are currently working on a solution.

thanks for the information Aleksandar, If that is in the documentation I missed it and must apologize. Also is there a way to prevent saving of those render elements to cut down on exr size?

Sorry to say, no, however, you may save your passes as separate single-channel exrs and later delete the unnecessary ones or another alternative that wоuld save a bit of space is to extract the VRayTotalLighting by dividing the VRayTotalLighting with the VRayDiffuseFilter - this way you would render one element less.

          Thanks!

I did just find one other thing. In Vray 3.6 the vraytoon atmospheric effect didn't show up in cryptomatte. It is now showing up in cryptomatte in vray next. I hoped that making sure "enable filtering" was turned off but unfortunately there is no difference with that on or off.

Are you certain you are rendering with the bucket image sampler (currently, it's a requirement)? If yes, could you share a simple scene so we can take a look?

HAHA!!! I was wrong it wasn't a difference between 3.6 and Vray Next. This doesn't make any sense to me, but it might to you. If you have a specular render element added, vraytoon outlines get baked into the cryptomatte, vraynormals, and velocity channel . I can't use my work file (NDA stuff) so I'll see what I can do about getting you one that you can use. I am attaching a non-descript

Its pretty easy to test though. Just create a box and throw a vraytoon atmospheric effect in. throw a cryptomatte render element into the mix (or vraynormals or velocity). Render, there should be no vraytoon outlines in the cryptomatte. Now add the specular render element. Suddenly the toon outlines are in the cryptomatte.

Thanks for the report and feedback. Indeed, the issue is easily reproducible - it seems the effect is applied to some utility channels if one of the beauty channels is present. It is already logged (internal bug-tracker id: VMAX-7060) and waiting developer investigation. The workaround here would be to render the image twice, the second of which without the beauty elements.

Thanks again Aleksandar! Luckily for our work we were able to kill the reflection on our materials and the specular render element since we are doing NPR it wasn't a huge loss. Otherwise we'd have to have done separate renders which would have been a much bigger deal on time and rendering.
