  • Getting rid of legacy "Mental Ray Connection" features

    Hello!

Is there a way to upgrade materials which were created by older versions of VRay? Now that Mental Ray is not supported, when opening files which contain older VRay materials, I get pop-up warnings for missing DLL's, and it's getting tiring.
The warning I get when opening file is: "FileName: mrmaterialattribs.gup Class: mental ray: material custom attribute"

I manged to narrow down cause of the the error to some materials' "Mental Ray Connection" section. Although I never used this section, this seems to be the cause of the warnings.

Any ideas, how to get rid of the error message, or upgrade materials so it discards this section?

    Thanks,
    Gábor

I did not manage to find out where the other warning comes from. It says: "FileName: mrmaterialattribs.gup Class: mental ray: Displacement Custom Attributes"
I managed to find an object which causes it. I deleted everything from the file but this object, and removed materials. It's an Editable Poly, so it does not have Dispacement applied.
I also deleted every User Property from the object (it had VRay settings), but the warning still remains.
    Any ideas?

Thank you! Your solution works, but I have to target the ini file to an older 3ds max folder, since 2021 does not have the Nvidia plugins folder anymore.

In the meantime I found out, that running the Scene Converter removes the MR features from the materials and objects.
        Thanks for the help!

Oh wow glad I found this... that was driving me nuts. Thanks Narmer Visual! The solution was to point "Additional MAX plug-ins NVIDIA=C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\PlugIns\NVIDIA\Plugins" to 2020 since 2021 does not have the Nvidia folder.

3ds max 2021 doesn't have an NVidia folder so you need to point it to the 2020 version.

                Go to "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\ 2021 - 64bit\ENU
                find the Plugin.User.Settings

make sure it looks like this:

                [Directories]
                Additional MAX plug-ins=C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2021\PlugIns\
                Additional MAX plug-ins NVIDIA=C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2020\PlugIns\NVIDIA\Plugins\
                [Help]

                problem should go away

I'll give it a try, thank you. The people at Autodesk doesn't have a solution. Basically, it is a user problem???

It's funny that Autodesk basically couldn't care less about helping, although the cure is obviously widely available

Hmm, what if one uninstalled the previous 3ds Max installations?

Yes that's true. Could you not use the folder that exists on one of our installations...or is that naughty?
If appropriate then I can dropbox it.

That would be super appreciated! And no, I can't see how that would be naughty as I'm a subscriber.
