    1. Navigate to %localappdata%\Autodesk\3dsMax\2021 - 64bit\ENU\en-US\defaults\MAX.vray (be sure to pick your correct version of 3dsMax)
    2. In 3ds Max load the Medit.mat, exchange the shaders with the ones that you would like and overwrite it (probably leaving a copy of the old one)
    3. Then the material editor should be populated with whatever materials you set up in there.

I didn't try out myself so can't tell you 100% it works. Let me know

    Best,

Great idea and it worked ! I replaced the reset materials with grey and just saved over the Medit.mat file.
    Perfect, thank you !

same problen over here. Switching back to Custom Defaults Switcher to not Vray solves the problem.

I expected it to be fixed in the V-Ray 5 official release, but it is not.

Is this a problem on the Autodesk side?

          wait for CHAOS's official comment.

Hi, this was a peculiar crash. I've reported my findings to Autodesk. As of the moment the workaround is to not use the MAX.vray defaults or alternatively I've made one that will use Physical Material as default. It should be placed in the "%localappdata%\Autodesk\3dsMax\2021 - 64bit\ENU\en-US\defaults\MAX.vray" directory, but I really hope this is a temporary measure.

I will update you when we have more info on this.

            Best regards,
            Alexander

We are also having this issue with vray 5 hotfix 1 on 3ds Max 2021. Switching to max default one over max.vray fixes the problem for now with UVW editor crashing, but really annoying not having vray materials present in material editor.. I hope this can be fixed in next hotfix.

Hi, this issue should be fixed in some future 3ds Max update/release.

                Best regards,

As an update, I ran into this problem just now with V-Ray 5 hotfix 2 and Max 2021.2
The .ini fix still works, but it's annoying!

It is indeed, unfortunately it's down to AD to modify their own code: there is nothing we can do on our side.

2021 Update 3 should resolve this when it comes out.
If it was that easy, it would have already been done
