I also rendered a 3k image and replicated your layer setup, but it rocksolid for me. Before it crashed when I played with the curve handles. I use this combination, maybe that can help you out?

Hello. I've just had Max crash again while manipulating a curve handle in the Curves layer. Max just froze for 10 seconds and then crashed without any error messages, so there are no .dmp files that I can send for inspection. One thing to note is that the process "WerFault.exe" appeared in the Task Manager when Max froze and it disappeared after it crashed.Max 2023.2.2 + Vray 6 Update 2.1 ( 6.20.06 )
