  • Vray 5 asset browser

I have noticed two issues, maybe wish list items.

It would be handy to be able to drag or otherwise load an asset browser material into one of the material editor sample slots versus only being able to assign it to a selected object. Maybe this is possible but I’m not finding how it’s done?

After assigning new material from asset browser to object, in material editor I then get material from object. Once in the material editor if it has a bitmap in, for instance, the diffuse slot and I click on view material, nothing is available to view and there is no path shown for where the map is located. This seems unfortunate and maybe something that could get “fixed” in a future update?

    overall vray5 is psich!

We hit some Max limitations for the drag and drop and will try to overcome them but it's not trivial.

You mean the "view image" button doesn't show anything?
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

Hi if I understood well you re looking to load materials from asset browser to the actual material editor? If that's the case then you can select "Get material" from you mat editor, then select "open material library". Then you have to select the location the vray materials library is saved (I have created a link on my desktop) and open the rquired library. The good thing is that you can edit and add variations of an existing material and save it as a new material back in the library.

You mean the "view image" button doesn't show anything?
I mean, when I click the view image button nothing appears. Like there is no path for the view image button to find he map so a window with the map in it does not open. Also there is the functionality whereby when your right click on the view image button a pop up menu of several choices appears. One is “get map location” or something like that. I’m not at my workstation right now so the actual term may be different but it opens a file directory window and is supposed,to show where the map is located.,That does not work either. So, IOW it seems when getting the asset browser material into the material editor, the path to the map(s) location is not available, which means when you click on view map....nothing appears.

DimiMala, I am essentially doing what you describe only first Imassign the material to as elected object via the asset browser, then I “get material” by using the eye dropper from within the material editor to get the material from the object I assigned the material to. Now The material from the asset browser is in he material editor and I can examine it and adjust etc as needed. That works, but would be a lot, simpler if somehow you could load material directly from asset browser to material editor. Drag and drop would be cool, but if that’s problematic perhaps a choice to “load material in material editor” from within the right click pop up menu of the material in the asset browser would be possible?

Here are a couple of screen grabs. Click on the view button and nothing happens.

If I want to edit one of the maps in a material from a supplied material in the asset browser....where are the maps located? Also, They all seem to be .tx files. I am not familiar with that file type. Can it be opened in photoshop?

I applied a material on an object and nothing shows - so I checked the path of the texture:

            assets\Bricks\Bricks_D_NM_01_hires_raw.tx

This is not a valid path and also - the TX is not a recognizable bitmap type I know of.
Where are the bitmaps and how do we re-locate 3dsmax or Vray to them ?

yep that's what I'm saying. but the material does show on the objects I apply it to. It shows up if you render (have to have mapping). You can use select from object to get it into the materiel editor and then use the show map button on the bitmap. It should then appear in the shaded viewport.

Still your points are iportant. the path is not available and the .tx file type is not one I have ever seen or used.

By default the library is installed in C:\Users\%user%\Documents\V-Ray Material Library. There tx files are in the assets folder. You are seeing the relative path in the filepath.

Why tx? It's a well known texture format optimized for rendering. TX files are tiled and mipmapped so they are very memory efficient. We've included the ability to open them from the "view image" button in the stable nightlies (which you all have access to) and it will be in the official hotfix coming in the next few weeks. It's working as well in the Viewport with "Shaded materials with maps" mode.

Thank you Peter. The .tx file format may work well and may even be required for the purposes you describe. It is, imho, unfortunate that a user cannot open the file in photoshop, add maybe an adjustment or modify as needed and save a copy in order to have a variation of the map. Not sure about others but I do that all the time.

Maybe there is a plug in or something that allows opening and editing of .tx files in photoshop?

No need mark, use open as in photoshop and choose tiff - that's all it is.

matanov - does vray need the .tx name specifically to do any of it's mip map things, as in does it treat the file differently if it's named .tx or .tif?

When I try this I get; This does not appear to be a valid PCIT. Quickdraw may crash attempting to draw it. Try anyway? When I click OK it says; Could not open "file name" because of a problem parsing the PICT.

Any clue what's going on and how I can fix it?

I’m not familiar with Quickdraw but suspect that may be the problem. It works in photoshop.

Perhaps find a .tif image file and see if that can be opened in Qickdraw. Or look into the QuickDraw help to try and determine if QuickDraw supports opening and working with .tif files. Hope this may help.

Sounds like you are opening it as an old school Mac PICT file. ( rather than a TIFF). This was a format accessed using Apple's QuickDraw library. PICT was a decent 8bpc format, supporting RLE compression, but it was limited to 4096 pixels. So kind of obsolete today.

This is the error message I get when opening it with Photoshop 2020. It opens up .TIFF files just fine but I can;t get any of the .TX files to open.
