  • Vray 5.005 - Issues with Material editor slots.

    Hi !

Installed the new hotfix2 and in my material editor (compact) the material slots were populated with Arnold's materials (Physical) and even after resetting the slots - still no Vray materials. I then used the "Custom UI and Defaults Switcher..." under 3ds max's Customize menu.
    Still the same

I had to revert to 5.004

    My system is:

    Windows 10
    128 GB RAM
    3ds max 2021
    Vray 5.005 Hotfix 2
    AMD 32 Cores

    Nir

    3ds Max 2016/2021 (Vray 6.x), Windows 10 64bit , AMD 2990WX ThreadRipper 32/64 Cores, 128 gigs RAM , 2X RTX3090 48GB RAM

      Thanks

I will look into it but I still consider it a bug as it never happenned with Vray.

EDIT: Tried it - Did not work. Still showing me the Physical Mats...

Hmm...it must work, as the max ini looks for that mat file on load.
Unless you are using a differently saved maxstart file which is conflicting with it
It has always worked in the past but maybe something has changed.
In the post I linked there is a further post suggesting doing a scene reset in max will sort it out. I can't test that, as mine is working just fine, but it's worth trying.

For us, it does not work when resetting the material editor, either. It does for every new scene, though. Strange indeed!

            Very odd indeed.
For me, since installing Vray 5 the slots are automatically populated with randomly coloured vray mats.
Even if I reset them all they stay as Vray mats.
I've since installed the hotfixes and nothing has changed.
            This is on Max '21 Version 23 00 915
I can't even work out how Vray managed to install and populate the slots unless it overwrites the mat file itself.
I can't remember if previously I had resaved the slots with my own vray mats but even so, I would have simply made them grey, not the randomly coloured
ones I have now. So I am both happy yet confused a little.
Possibly there is some line in the a config or ini file that is changed....I have forgotten where they are in the folders but if I can find them I'll update what I see.

            EDIT: My defaults.ini has this:

            ; Material Editor
            ; materialType
; The Market Defaults include a material library,
; to load default Material Editor slots instead.
            [100 C80 0]
            ; V-Ray Material
            materialType=0x37bf3f2f 0x7034695c

EDIT 2: The above is from max 21 with vray 5. The OP is using next, so I looked and found that this is what I have in Max 20 using NEXT:

            ; Material Editor
            ; materialType
; The Market Defaults include a material library,
; to load default Material Editor slots instead.
            [100 C80 0]
; No material type, value not used - system will use Standard.
            materialType=0x0 0x0

So that defaults to standard, not Physical mats - no idea why. I tried changing this to the Vray lines but it doesn't work.

Anyway, I simply copied my Max 21 Vray 5 medit file and now Max 20 opens with those vray mats, so that is one thing. If you want that medit file then I could dropbox it, though the procedure is simple as explained in the link given.
The Reset Slots function does not reset to Vray in Max 20 however and that is currently a mystery to me, if, as mentioned, it works just fine with Vray 5/Max 21
Can anyone from Chaos explain what needs altering please?

            I did find this, which may/may not work - I didn't test it http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/sc...aterial-editor

EDIT:https://forums.cgarchitect.com/topic...terial-editor/ This suggests a fix to resetting them. I looked at both max 20 and 21 version and cannot see a difference, so I don't know quite how that works or what could be changed to make it work. I'll leave that to someone else who may know more

My problem began after updating from Vray 5.004 to 5.005. It was OK until then.

                Hi,

Could you try again with the default 3ds max settings. To do that you have to rename the ENU folder, which is located here.
                C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\ 20XX - 64bit\ENU.
Rename the ENU folder to ENU_old. When 3ds max is launched, a new ENU folder will be created.

Let us know how it goes.
