  • Displacement Mess

I fight this all the time, however, subdivisions usually solve it. Now, with V-Ray 5, subdivision turns my displacement black.

That's bad underlying geometry I reckon - if the wireframe of that mesh was visible I reckon there'd be a few large diagonal faces visible. If it was cut out from a plane in edit poly mode, it might be hiding the triangles from you in the viewport but using them at render time?

Subdividing less than I typically worked. Usually, I subdivide 3", but it turned black. I stopped at a foot and all worked.

Sometimes quadrify mesh helps. Poor topology will very frequently cause render artifacts. It’s extremely annoying with, say, stock models, where you weren’t intending to remodel the whole thing.

Anyone use any of the newer automatic retopologizers? I have heard they can do pretty well.
