  • Renders not saving with vfb corrections

'Upgraded' to Max 2021 and VRay 5 recently and seem to have run into a problem with renders not saving properly. Support has failed me so far in a zero response fashion so im hoping I can get some help from here instead.

If I tick the V-Ray raw image file save check box and try to save files as vray image or EXR so I can use the stand alone denoiser tool on an animation to try and reduce flicker it will never save out the vfb corrections. I've ticked and unticked the correction tick box when saving but still it just ignores it. This worked fine previously in an older animation but now it just wont work?

If I save channels separately then it works fine. If I manually save from the VFB it works as well. It is just the V-Ray raw image file check box that doesnt save anything out how it should look.

Anyone had anything similar? Know of a setting that might have changed? I tried comparing 2019 + Vray Next with 2021 + Vray 5 but I cant see any differences in my settings.

It seems to be working fine. Does it happen in every scene? Found your ticket in our system; could you send the scene in question as well?

Seems to be every scene yeah, I'll try package one up and show you how it is saving and how it appears in frame buffer for me. I tried checking gamma as well but it doesnt seem to get anywhere close to it by adjusting gamma in post so I figured it has to be missing the exposure and colour corrections.

Any luck your end? I'd love to leave a few projects going over the weekend.

Thanks for the provided scene. There is no difference in the images, only a slight confusion. Note that, currently, the color corrections are saved ONLY in the EffectsResult channel (if available) upon saving. Also, the RGB color channel within the VFB acts as EffectsResult and has color corrections applied. So, you may be wrongly comparing the images (I know I did). Since you're going to use the denoiser separately, be advised that it takes the RGB channel. You may remove the lens effects in the VFB (so that the effectsResult is not created), make sure "save VFB color corrections to RGB channel" is activated, set the denoiser to "Only generate elements" and later apply both effects in the standalone denoiser tool (see how here).

Hi so in that example file it had bloom enabled in the layer stack of the VFB but in my other file its not visible in the layer stack however it does seem "enable bloom" is ticked, even though its turned off in the layer stack. The new VFB doesnt let me delete the lens effect layer out, its just stuck there. So do I need to make sure it is not enabled even if its ticked to be not visible.

Also slightly confusing that if I manually save it then it looks fine but when done through VRay it separates the channel to an effects channel? I didnt see my VFB showing me an effects channel, only RGB.

Going to quickly test with everything to do with Lens Effects turned off. I guess the new VFB has changed a few things I need to double check.

Yes, you need to disable the lens effects (not just hide them). The effectsResult channel is created shortly after starting the rendering.

Yep that sorted it. rendered and saved how I want it now, the lens effect wasnt even needed! how frustrating.

                  Thanks for the help!
