It'll get better with native Qt, ever for cases where now it's horrible to work with.

i tried on different machine, with fresh win10 install, fresh max 2022 and vray, same lag..seems to be the same as the original post video.

Yeah, that could well be the issue, you see.

Bah, can't edit the post, today.
As mentioned in the thread, you ought to be getting around 1000ms redraw time for the vrayMtl UI on a cheap CPU, with the standard material editor.
Anything more, you're likely wasting cycles to something else.
Slate, for its own internal reasons, may well be slower than the traditional editor: if you're doing a lot of shader development, consider not using slate (the functionalities are identical between the two.), or using one of the explained methods with system variables to shave some redraw time and gain some redraw consistency.

This redraw speed is definitely not normal. It's at least 2 times faster on my PC (see signature). Make sure you don't have any heavy load on CPU thread 0 and CPU thread 1 since 3ds Max uses these exact threads for UI.

Hi, thanks for reply and sorry to be a pain, as clearly its fine for other people . My CPU , according to taskmanager is about 8% when clicking it. It barely changes when clicking the max materials, but goes to around 13% when clicking the vray. (doubt thats useful info, but thought I would mention it).

I installed 2022.1 with my fingers crossed....no luck ...this is with me using the compact material ed. I know its not a totally fair comparison, but the difference selecting the vray mat, over max's physical material is quite noticeable. Do they use the same process? Cpu wise?

It has been like this for us for quite a while now. Hoping to see some improvement with the Qt implementation of the VrayMtl.

Nah, you're just slightly slower than most.
The key issue is being non-native Qt, we match the speeds of the Qt controls you show in our internal tests, and Vlado just showed the improvements on the ALSurface Material.
While you wait for us to finish the work we're doing, scroll back in the thread, and try the system variable i suggested, as while it won't ameliorate the translation time, it may well better the redraw times, and ensure for a more stable performance (the speeds are known to be very varying, and getting worse with more redraws, with the default settings. check the spreadsheets i posted.).

Hi, I tried to add the recommended system variables and from my feeling it improved! I now have rougly similar redraw speeds like in the gif just postet, maybe slightly less snappy. The only thing odd is that the VRayMtl still takes considerably longer than any other materials to refresh, (compared to Standard, Physical, ALSurface, FastSSS in my test), like roughly 4 times longer. So while other materials maybe take half a second, the VRayMtl takes like 2-3 seconds which I found was odd. Shouldn't they all take the same time?

Edit: Oh and any reason why the Physical Material seems to open instantly in the Compact Material Editor? If I click one of the swatches I get an immediate refresh and for other Materials it seems to take a while. VRayMtl also slightly slower than the rest.

yeah i must have entered it wrong, as i tried again and is a bit snappier, so better than nothing

Here you can find the latest benchmarks for the Qt UIs coming for V-Ray 5 Update 2.
We're confident this will go a long way helping with the lag, but we'll of course continue to listen in to your feedback.
