  • Glare and glow not showing over framebuffer backplate

Been struggling with this issue for a while. Attached are the images that show the problem. If I saving WIPs out of the framebuffer as flat jpgs how do I get my glare and glow to show over the frambuffer backplate? Its just a jpg in the background, so no alpha channels or anything complex. Backplate showing, it cuts off, no backplate, seems ok. The glare and glow has no alpha contribution in the alpha, channel so I assume its something to do with that. But I still need a way to show my render correctly.

Tried to raise awareness for this three years ago, but somehow ended up in a debate. I have somewhat of a talent to find issues that never get fixed.

I usually generate a Glare render element and copy that over to Photoshop together with the RGB+Background. Then simply set the Glare render element to "Add" and it looks the same.
Do not know why this can not be done directly in the VFB, it would make the workflow a little more fluid.

Yeh exactly. I make iteration after iteration and copy into clipboard and paste into Photoshop to see the small lighting and shader tweaks Im doing. Its fast and works for me, but Im amazed that the glare is clipped like this over a simple backplate. Your way does work (which is basically how I also do it), but its extra steps, which is time spent on other things than making the image as good as possible.

Reading your other thread, lets hope its fixed in Vray 5. I havnt had the chance to test it yet. Id also very much push back on the greying out the BG option with Lenxfx applied. Id say its less than 50% of my shots have the lensfx spill out side the silhouette of the car and cause an issue. A lot of the times its on the bonnet or wherever and sits nicely together with the background.

Sorry to say that this is not achievable in the old VFB and would have to be done in compositing. Alternatively, you can plug the backplate bitmap in the Environment slot.
With the introduction of the new V-Ray Frame Buffer, however, it is possible do this directly in the VFB by setting Source: Composite and adding the desired backplate as a Background layer.

Pretty sure I tested this while on Beta and it did not work.

Nikoleta, can you please post an example together with the layer tree of VFB2?

Itd be great if this workflow is fixed in Vray 5. Looking forward to testing it!

Plugging into the environment slot would not work for me as I need to use RT and render with colour mapping. VFB background isnt affected by colour mapping (good!) env slot background is affected by colour mapping (in RT, bad!)

Nice. Is the background in that situation affected by colour mapping?

Okay, thank you! It does only work in Composite Mode, not in RGB with Background, right? Why is that? Can it be made to work with the RGB mode as well?
If it can not be done to the RGB mode, can you please update the documentation? Information like this is nowhere to find right now.
