  • Vray 5 + Deadline not saving lens fx correctly

I'm relatively new to using Deadline, but I noticed that when using it the lens FX are not saving correctly. If I render the scene locally and save through the VFB I will get the glare, origRGB, and RGB render passes. If I send the exact same scene to Deadline, I will only get the RBG pass and the lens FX will be much stronger in the scene. Is there a checkbox in Deadline for something? I believe we are running Deadline as a service if that helps. I think cyrptomatte elements are also not saving correctly with Deadline.

It's kind of annoying, but right now my workaround is just saving a vrimg file and doing everything locally with that file once it is done off the render farm.

My deadline workflow is to manually run a VraySpawner job to get all the DR machines active. Then in Deadline, submit the single frame render to a single machine that then picks up all of the VraySpawners. When using DBR offload, I've noticed it's not as reliable as my current method as if there are a few jobs stacked up it can confuse Deadline when it is trying to start/stop spawers in DBR offload mode.

From what I understood, you are sending a job with an active DR to a slave to which other slaves are connecting and the DR is done on that particular machine, correct?

Yes. The odd part is that if I render local using the save active DR slaves, the lens fx save correctly. If I use those same active DR slaves and network render using Backburner, the lens FX saves correctly. The issue is only happening when using Deadline to render the image, but Deadline is the only process out of everything that is running as a service. Maybe it is because the VFB isn't being displayed during the Deadline rendering?

Try disabling the "Local rendering" when submitting to Deadline and see if that makes any difference. There is a note on the Lens effects documentation page about the matter.

Thanks! The answer is always in the fine print somewhere.

Can you provide a screencap of where that setting is? Are you referring to "Use Localhost" in the distributed rendering settings or is this a setting within Deadline?

It is a Deadline setting located in the 3ds max Submission to Deadline UI in 3ds Max, under the Render tab, in the 3ds Max pathing rollout.
