  • VRAY Viewport IPR Banding in Dark Areas

    Hi all (again),

I just set up a simple test scene, and I'm getting some significant banding in dark spots of my scene. Is there any fix for this?

This is a display issue, not an error caused by V-Ray as such.

The issue stems from the fact that 3ds Max applies a 2.2 gamma to the 8-bit data input. The banding can be avoided if we apply this gamma on the 32-bit data prior to the viewport preview and afterward displaying the corrected 8-bit result. This would, however, affect the viewport preview performance capabilities. If such a performance sacrifices are acceptable, we may add an environment variable for its control. Another solution would be for Autodesk to provide us with an interface allowing a 16/32bit linear input on which to apply the gamma curve, however, this is not certain.
