  • Embree Fails - Works on weaker systems though? :/

    Hi there,

    Vray Version - vray_adv_50005_max2021_x64

I have a scene with a cad model of a vehicle, some forest pack assets, motion blur with wheels spinning, and a couple displacements. Here is my concern. I have the same exact scene (was rendering animation test) rendering just fine on my other two machines which have weaker computer specs. Below is a list of the computer its crashing on as well as the other two computers it rendered just fine on. I keep getting the error about Embree Failing.

    Rendering a 1920x1920 animation.

    PC It Crashes On
    • Windows 10 Pro
    • 128 GB Ram
    • Intel i9-7980XE CPU
    • Nvidia GTX 1080 TI

Below are two of the computers the scene renders just fine on and these computers as you can see are weaker in specs.

    PC# 1
    • Windows 7 Pro
    • 64 GB Ram (Half the ram of the computer that crashes)
    • Intel Xeon E5-2670 V2
    • Nvidia GTX 980

    PC# 2
    • Windows 10 Pro
    • 64 GB Ram (Half the ram of the computer that crashes)
    • AMD Ryzen 9 3900x
    • Nvidia GTX 1650

Any help would be greatly appreciated, If this computer is crashing due to not enough ram or cpu power, then my other 2 computers that are weaker in performance should also be crashing, so I do not quite understand what is happening right now.

The error I received just now, again the weaker systems are rendering just fine.

The only thing I can personally think of is maybe the RAM I have in the computer is having actual difficulties which then makes it a hardware problem and nothing the software can do. Looking for some opinions though, please and thank you!

Turn down the clock speed of the RAM in your BIOS and try again. Also, disable any overclocking. If the problems persists, turn it all back up

We render with a 128gb of ram ryzen all the time, in the office, so it's not the amount of RAM.
          Is this scene-specific?
If you could set up a reproducible situation, i'm sure support and the devs would be keen on it.

I will try to update the bios overall hopefully sometime tonight and also check on the clock speed. I believe I left the speed and all other settings on default since I am too much of a puss to overclock lol.

I wish I could, I believe the issue comes from the combo of CAD data plus all the forest pack assets and displacement maps. But the bigger concern/annoyance for me is that my systems of weaker specs are rendering just fine and not the hero pc, thats where the confusion comes from lol. I would be fine to accept if the scene was too much and none of the systems can render it, but when a computer not as good does fine and this beast does not, it bothers me lol.

              Eheh i hear you!
Well, you know where to send the offending scene to, in case, right?
There could be very specific problems with some hardware, which we never somehow spotted, and could come to light thanks to your sweat and tears.

You still might want to slow the RAM down one notch if you think it is the culprit. Not all RAM actually works at the rated speed with every motherboard. I have had systems where it had to be slower.

Windows had a built in boot time RAM tester now. Or there is memtestx86. These can test the RAM in the machine at whatever settings you use in the BIOS.

I would be sure to remove all the preferences folders first (like %Appdata%\*\autodesk). In other words assume software first unless you have reason to suspect the hardware.

I slowed down the ram and been doing a test animation render on just the pc that was crashing, so far so good. I hope this stays solid and keeps going, thank you for your advice Joe!

Glad it seems to be working. Always sucks when you have to do that. I always try to but RAM on the QVL list, but even then I have seen this issue.

If it is on the QVL then when you have time turn it up to it’s rated speed and run memtestx86 and figure out which stick is failing and try to get a replacement. Likely one is just not up to spec.

So slowing the ram down helped but did not solve the problem. I did try a new thing and that was put in the Dram latency stuff manually instead of leaving it on auto as well as setting the voltage to 1.2 instead of Auto. I think this has helped a lot, so far so good but fingers crossed. Re-rendering about 200 frames today for a client and going to see what happens.
